The traffic section of the Mesa Police Department has been awarded over $500,000 in grants from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety to support the department's DUI enforcement and promotions of roadway safety.

The funding will be used for programs such as DUI task force events, enforcement related patrol projects, back to school and speed enforcement.

The GOHS grant funding awarded to the Mesa Police Department includes a DUI Abatement Grant for $100,000, which will fund DUI task force events and employee related expenses for DUI enforcement. The department also received DUI Enforcement Overtime funding for $170,000, which will cover the continuous DUI enforcement, the department's major holiday task force and DUI enforcement related patrol projects. 

According to the Mesa Police Department, the grant funding also included $86,500 for traffic enforcement overtime which will be used for the department's back to school and speed enforcement. The department also received $8,678 in funding for accident investigation training including a collision reconstruction training course and $10,687 for desktop computers/monitors for traffic reconstruction detectives. 

In addition, the Mesa Police Department's crime lab was awarded a $142,500 GOHS grant for the purchase of a liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer which will enable screening of DUI blood samples for intoxicating substances.
