The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has launched a free app to help drivers navigate travel delays and highway hazards throughout the state.

The new app, ADOT Alerts, features geofencing technology. Through the app, alerts are sent to mobile devices in areas with highway closures and detours due to crashes or severe weather, according to the ADOT.

“We’re excited about ADOT Alerts because the app will help us quickly get critical information directly to motorists,” ADOT Director John Halikowski said in a press release. “With that information, travelers can make a decision to take a different route or stop somewhere for a bite to eat or stay where they’re at, and avoid sitting in a long backup because of an unplanned event, like a serious crash that closes a highway."

The state also can alert motorists to public safety issues, like wrong-way vehicles or severe weather affecting state highways. The alerts, which are sent out by a public information officer from the ADOT Traffic Center, provide real-time information to drivers such as the notices on overhead highway message boards and social media.

The app does not require sign-up, registration or a log-in to use and can be downloaded in the Apple App Store and Goggle Play by searching “ADOT Alerts.”  Visit adotalerts.com for more information.
