The city of Mesa expects more than 1,000 volunteers to participate in a variety of community-service projects as it celebrates National Make a Difference Day.
The city has registered the volunteers who will take part in the call for service on Oct. 28, according to a press release.
According to the city, volunteers, who include residents, neighborhood groups, local businesses, service organizations, church groups and Mesa city employees, will work on a number of projects throughout the city.
Projects include painting walls, cleaning up illegal dumping, painting curb numbers to reduce emergency-response time, painting homes, reporting graffiti and helping residents in need complete yard work.
Held each year on the fourth Saturday of October, Make A Difference Day was initiated by USA Weekend magazine and is designed to encourage people to join in a national day of helping others.
Volunteer sign-ups are still being accepting for those interested in participating. Community groups and individuals are welcome to volunteer.
The city also offers a Make A Difference Day Volunteer Tool Kit, which can be downloaded.
