The Cochise County Library District has unveiled its new grant-funded Free Book Box project, with a goal of bringing access to books to rural areas of the community.

The Free Book Box unveiling included a community event featuring a visit from Arizona Secretary of State Michelle Reagan, Palominas Elementary School District Superintendent Marylotti Copeland and first-grade artists who designed the book box, according to a press release.

Each box holds a variety of adult and children’s books in English and Spanish and are expected to house and help distribute several hundred books. Community members can donate books and borrow books from the Free Book Box.

“We are very excited about this project,” Cochise County Library District Director Amadee Ricketts said in a statement. “The library district was honored to receive grant funds from the Arizona State Library this year, and project coordinator Karen Fasimpaur has helped us build the community partnerships that will make the Free Book Boxes a lasting success.”

The locations for the book boxes were selected through community members, libraries and community partners. The first three locations will include Valley View Community Center in Hereford, the Mustang Mountain Shell and Ford Mart on Highway 90 in Whetstone and at 3856 S. Towner Ave. in Naco near the Port of Entry.
