Scottsdale is seeking submissions for its flag-design competition, which runs through Oct. 27.

Engaging area residents for a new city flag has become increasingly recognized as valuable to community spirit in recent times, as evidenced by municipalities such as Peoria, Arizona and Pocatello, Idaho, according to a press release.

The city of Scottsdale took notice when a local high school student Connor Heron posed the suggestion. City officials hope to promote the jurisdiction and its achievements in the venues of western heritage, nature and culture through the competition, the release said.

The city’s Neighborhood Advisory Commission will review entries and select finalists based on public input.

Flag design is not as simple as placing a seal or civic symbol on a white background, which is the current city flag. To learn more, potential entrants can research vexillology, the study of flags. The North American Vexillological Association, for example, jointly publishes a guide with professional associations including the United Kingdom’s Flag Institute.

If a new design is selected by the City Council, it would be implemented early next year.
