The Coconino County Public Health Services District is encouraging residents to get flu shots and is offering flu shots for $30 at its Flagstaff clinic.

The district is taking appointments for the flu vaccination shot, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends for anyone 6 months and older each year.

Those who are high risk include pregnant women; children younger than 5, especially those under age 2; children with special health care needs; those older than 50; people of any age with chronic medical conditions; and those in nursing homes or long-term-care facilities. The CDC is also recommending the flu vaccine for those who care for high-risk people, including health care workers and caregivers of children younger than 6 months old.

To reduce the chances of getting the flu, wash hands frequently, avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth; and avoid people who are sick. The Public Health Services District recommends covering your mouth with your upper sleeve or a tissue when coughing or sneezing to help prevent spreading the virus. Also avoid sharing utensils, cups and straws and stay home when sick.
