The city of Scottsdale has free sandbags available for residents facing possible flooding from summer monsoon storms.

The city reminds residents that while shovels and bags are provided, residents must fill their own bags. There is a limit of 10 bags per household, according to a press release. When filling sandbags, residents should add enough sand to fill the bag between one-half and two-thirds full. Sandbags should be placed in front of entry points, such as exterior doors, sliding doors and garage doors.

Sand and sandbags are available at the District 1 Police Headquarters parking lot, 7601 E. McKellips Road; the north Corporation Yard, 9379 E. San Salvador; and the Solid Waste Transfer Station, 8417 E. Union Hills Drive.

The city also warned residents to avoid driving through standing and running water, particularly near Indian Bend Wash. When monsoon storms hit, residents should stay inside at home or work until the heavy rains subside, the release said.

Before the storm hits, put together an emergency kit with flashlights, fresh batteries, bottled water and a battery-powered radio. Pack a backpack or suitcase with medications, important papers and photos tucked into sealed plastic bags, personal items, extra clothes and other important items. If notified to evacuate, grab the bag and go; don't hesitate or wait for the water to rise any higher. In addition, prepare a communication plan for family members and friends and a central meeting point, the release said.
