The Scottsdale Police Department has acquired two motorcycles for officers to use on duty.
A grant from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety allowed the department to make the purchase.
Officers will use the vehicles during traffic enforcement, DUI patrols around the city and to ensure pedestrian safety, according to a press release.
They have been equipped with emergency lights, which are beneficial for officer safety during patrols.
Police motorcycles have been responsible for faster response times due to the vehicle’s ability to move in and out of congested areas easier than police cars, the press release said.
In Arizona, there were over 120,000 collisions in 2016, and 962 of those were fatal, according to government statistics. Collisions involving pedestrians totaled 1,637. One of the most common factors in the collisions was drivers going too fast for road conditions.
Statistics also show the number of overall collisions has risen as has the number of fatal collisions. In 2015, there were over 116,000 collisions, with 897 of those being fatal.
