Gov. Doug Ducey declared a state of emergency saying that Arizona would allocate expanded resources to battle raging wildfires amplified over the past few months by heat, wind and available fuels.

Ducey established the emergency period, which ends June 30, as a cushion until the new fiscal year begins July 1 and more funding becomes available. His declaration authorized $200,000 to be dispatched toward firefighting efforts. It also asks that the State Emergency Council provide the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management with resources such as manpower on an as-needed basis, according to a news announcement.

The State Emergency Council comprises state and legislative officials, according to the governor’s office. Arizona experienced an unusually high number of large fires during April, May and June, depleting existing budgeted finances for fire suppression efforts.

“We thank the many brave men and women who have stepped up and responded to wildfires around Arizona,” Ducey said in the announcement. “I’m issuing [this] declaration to make sure they have every resource needed to do their jobs and protect our communities. Public safety is our top priority, and we will continue to coordinate with state and local emergency response officials to keep Arizonans safe."
