Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone discusses his approach to law enforcement with Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams and moderator Sarah Strunk of Fennemore Craig during a Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce Premier Leadership Series event. | Phoenix Chamber of Commerce

The leaders of Arizona’s largest policing agencies recently discussed what it takes for law enforcement to be effective during a Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce Premier Leadership Series event.

Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams and Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone said they had a strong belief in collaboration between law enforcement and local businesses, according to a press release.

“How we are viewed as community on how we treat people directly impacts the growth and development of business owners … It is my responsibility to show discipline, ethics and professionalism so that whoever comes here knows that they will be safe and their business can thrive,” Penzone said in the press release.

Williams said community members needed to work together to ensure a safe neighborhood.

“You see cities burning and riots, you see all kinds of things happening across this country. We are able manage civil, peaceful protests here. That’s because we’re amazing at our relationship building,” she said in the release. “I ask that when you see things happening across the country, don’t paint the Phoenix Police Department or Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office as that department. Get to know us as your department and connection point.”

The Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce has a webcast of the event for those interested in seeing more.
