Tucson Metro Chamber President and CEO Michael Varney recently released a letter in which he called the decision by the Tucson Unified School District Board to accept the resignation of Superintendent H.T. Sanchez  regrettable.

In the letter, titled "A Dark Day in Tucson" and posted March 1 on the chamber's website, Varney said, "In my view, this was not a resignation. Dr. Sanchez was railroaded by three members of the board."

Varney went on the say the end result is that the school district now has no superintendent. He also said this is a reoccurring problem that the school district is not fixing nor helping.

"This is the eighth superintendent in 20 years," Varney said in the letter. "The TUSD board has real problems that will never be solved by hiring and dismissing superintendents."

Varney said in the letter that he spoke in favor of Sanchez at two previous board meetings, and "many of the teachers and administrations were supportive of Sanchez in the role as well."

"Dr. Sanchez had widespread support for his vision for the district, his innovative ideas and most of all, his accomplishments," Varney said in the letter. "But no matter how well he performed, there were always board members who would never be happy and who were looking for faults among his vast array of successes."
