Data from the Arizona Department of Health Services and the state's Office of Economic Activity indicates medical marijuana users legally consumed more than 29 tons of the drug last year in Arizona, up 52 percent from 2015, a recent article on the Casa Grande Dispatch website said.

More than 114,000 people are registered to consume medical marijuana in Arizona, the article said. Though the amount of legal marijuana use more than doubled from 2015 to 2016, the number of registered users increased less than 35 percent.

A law approved by voters seven years ago allows Arizona residents with specific medical conditions to obtain up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana every two weeks if a doctor recommends the treatment. Glaucoma, nausea and post-traumatic stress disorder are some of the conditions approved for medical marijuana uses in the state, according to the article.

Data from the health department shows that more than 90 percent of the marijuana purchased legally was bought as whole leaves or flowers, which can be used to brew a drink or for smoking, the article said. Six percent of the purchases were as pre-made edibles such as cookies or candy; the rest was in pill or liquid form.

Data also shows that most medical marijuana users live in Maricopa County, followed by Pima County, the article said.
